Entry 1: Goblin Day 1 and a bit

I’m going to try and create a new CGI character, and here’s 3 reasons why I’m writing a blog about it:

One: I found that doing a project blog (for uni) in the past helped me understand the process a little more and sometimes it solved a few problems along the way. It also helps to ‘say it out loud’ in a non-verbal way when you’re on your own sitting in a darkened room in front of multiple backlit screens and a surly feline by my side.

Two: because I am currently looking for work in the field and having only one good model in my folio is not enough (in my opinion) to show my range and talents.

and Three: it’s self-guided. I’ve come up with the project myself and my procrastination habit needs to be held accountable. I need to finish this project. If I do this one right, I might just do more, get better, and be quicker with each new attempt.

One thing though, I’m not setting a timeline. This just stresses me out and I have a life that provides many welcome and unwelcome distractions. My only weakness is getting started on an idea, which I’ve narrowed down to a goblin character (this may have been influenced by recently watching Labyrinth again for what could very well be the thirty-something-th time in my life or more, it’s a classic).

Now I have the idea, I need to create the character:

There are so many ways this guy could be done, so I did what any temporarily creatively-starved artist would do: googled it.  I know I want a more friendly, cheeky kind of guy, but my search results yielded many options ranging from simple low poly friendly-type characters, to highly detailed more sinister characters.

So now i have an artboard of inspiration and have been writing down ideas on features I want him to have, along with personalty qualities and the like. My one true weakness is that I seem to lack the skills to draw an animated character despite my artistic talents of the past.

So here goes. Read or don’t read, it’s your call. I’ll try to keep the posts as brief as possible.
