A six-week break (or was it seven?) did not do me any favours in formulating an end result in my research unfortunately. Had I known a physical piece was required to produce at the end of my research, I would have spent that time to work on it. Rant over.
I’m at the stage where I’m about to send off my research survey in order to gain results that will help determine and refine what I need to create for my final research piece – time is once again funnelling down and not leaving much for what has been suggested to me.
Being a digital designer, its logical that I create a product that showcases the skills I have learned throughout the past 2 years at uni. Sadly, the suggestions provided (app or web thingy) both contain code, my biggest weakness. Design and creating a function idea is no issue for me, it’s the technical ability to produce that I lack, a problem I will have to seek a solution for.
But first, I must keep in mind the reason for my studies: See a need, fill a need. I see a need for a lot of things in life, now I need to find one for this. Challenging to say the least.
One idea had popped into my mind (with the help of tutor guidance): a digital interactive storybook. Nutted out a little further, I want to keep the detour narrative structure, and have 2 separate endings. Given the time constraints, I will need to keep this very simple, allowing no more than 3 detours (refer to pic), the third being the ending if possible.
Planned detour narrative structure
Since writing this blog yesterday I’ve been advised to look into Adobe Animate CC as my program to create the narrative. Coincidentally, and thankfully, I have already downloaded it as it was also advised by an animation company to learn it for 2D animation work.
Take a step back to my methodology survey, the content was more adult-themed, where participants are required to view an online documentary (still deciding between Alma – A tale of violence, or Bear 71. If I used the more viewer-friendly rating, Bear 71, I could find more people to a) complete the survey, and b) to generate more a family-themed end product, so I will probably use this as my survey topic video.
Driving home from uni last week I came up with the idea of my end product being a kid’s storybook, but perhaps I could upgrade it a touch to be something a little more grown up, without attracting a mature audience rating. If I can use a child story book, I’m going to use a kid’s book I made (yes, made) back in high school and alter the story to suit the new narrative model. This is what I need to discuss with my tutor in class this week. I also need to get that survey out ASAP.
So here’s my list of things to do this week:
- Talk to tutor re survey questions and decide on online movie to feature in study.
- Write up and include consent form with intro email.
- Decide on end product model – web or app or other? Explore HTML5, Flash Action Script 3 as possible outputs for end product. Need to decide this before anything else so artwork and function can be created to suit.
- Generate a plan or scope of works.
- Learn Adobe Animate CC.
