Entry 2: Dwarflin aka Goblin – inspiration board

Hey so it’s been a while and some small changes have occurred since the last post. This was originally going to be a love job done in my spare time, I got as far as creating one heck of an inspiration board – over 50 images. Too much, I know, I tend to over-research things. Here’s just a sampling:

I’ve derived a lot of inspiration from Labyrinth and The Hobbit/LOTR movies.

Since my first post I have started a digital sculpture course, so I’ve now used this model as my piece to work on – given I’ve already got a head start, it made sense. I’ve also decided to rename him as a Dwarflin, a cross-over between a dwarf and a goblin, although he’s leaning to more towards the dwarf side of things 🙂

You may see a hint of Hoggle in there…

Here’s a VERY rough first sketch I made after spending a bit of time mulling over my inspiration board and watching the movies – you know, for research’s sake.

In addition to using Maya to sculpt my model, the digi sculpture course requires a more naturally sculptured finish in Mudbox, which will be where the bulk of the work will be done, so this will add more opportunity to create finer details such as skin blemishes, wrinkles etc.
